In 2007, The Compound was approached by a San Francisco-based agency and asked to develop effective online tools that motivate households and businesses in nine California counties to reduce water usage.
The Compound worked closely with the agency, as well as San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC), in developing an online presence that is easy to use and visually compelling. The result is SFPUC’s Water Saving Hero website (www.watersavinghero.com). The website successfully hit its mark: It became a critical tool in an overall effort that is credited for reducing water consumption among the Bay-area’s diverse population by 13 percent.
The website offers an inviting design and intuitive interface. It provides quick access to helpful information on water conservation and includes community involvement tools such as the “Tell Us Your Story” message board, which allows users to post stories about how they conserve water in their homes and businesses.
And to keep things fun, Water Saving Hero allows users to see themselves as “Water Saving Heroes.” Users upload photos and then pass the water conservation message on to friends and family with a “Send to a Friend” feature.
